The Consumer Reports Cars team will be on site for the 2009 New York International Auto Show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center when the doors open to the media on Wednesday morning. Through the two media days, the editors and engineers together will provide coverage live from the car-filled halls, featuring the latest concept vehicles and production models. Further, we will cover news, trends, and observations here in the blog, as well. We are joined by our colleagues from CRTV, who will be producing videos on notable models throughout the week.

As with every show, there are many vehicles that have been formally announced and many that are either rumored or remain surprises. Ultimately, that is part of the excitement.

Vehicles we are expecting include the Acura ZDX, BMW X6M, Ford Transit Connect family concept, GMC Terrain, GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid, Kia Sorento, Land Rover LR4, Mazda CX-9, Mazdaspeed3, Mitsubishi Outlander GT, Nissan 370Z convertible, Scion iQ, Subaru Legacy, and Volkswagen GTI. That should be enough to get us started…

We hope you follow along with our main New York auto show coverage, as we will update reports and photography through the days, and even nights, as material becomes available. Likewise, we will be blogging the event continuously here.

This, the last North American event of the new-car show season, is a final sneak-peek at the upcoming 2010 releases and hints of what is coming further down the road. As you follow our coverage, be sure to post comments sharing your impressions of the models.

If you are in the area, the show opens to the public on Friday. (Read information on attending NYIAS.)

—Jeff Bartlett

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have completed a study on unintentional child injury and its prevention. According to the report, the top five causes of child injury and injury-related death are:

1. Road crashes: They kill 260,000 children a year and injure about 10 million. They are the leading cause of death among 10-19 year olds and a leading cause of child disability.

2. Drowning: It kills more than 175,000 children a year. Every year, up to 3 million children survive a drowning incident. Due to brain damage in some survivors, non-fatal drowning has the highest average lifetime health and economic impact of any injury type.

3. Burns: Fire-related burns kill nearly 96,000 children a year and the death rate is 11 times higher in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries.

4. Falls: Nearly 47,000 children fall to their deaths every year, but hundreds of thousands more sustain less serious injuries.

5. Poisoning: More than 45,000 children die each year from unintended poisoning.

Globally, road traffic injuries are the number one cause of child injury and injury-related death among young people aged 15 to 19 years and the second leading cause among 5- to 14-year-olds. In 2004, road traffic injuries accounted for approximately 30% of all injury deaths among children,

For younger child occupants, the lack, or improper use of, a child restraint is the main risk factor. While many parents use child restraints for infants, the use decreases significantly after the child has outgrown the infant device.

Young drivers are at high risk of a crash in their first year of driving by themselves due to both their immaturity and lack of driving experience. A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety examines the benefit of delaying teen licensure and the effect of implementing graduated licensing systems, providing insight into how the United States compares to other nations.

Worldwide, 17 or 18 is the typical age a teen gets their drivers license. In the U.S., most states allow teens to drive alone at age 16 or 16 1/2, some as early as 14 1/2 or 15, and the only state to withhold driving licensure until 17 is New Jersey. There have been a few states that have proposed changing the age of licensure to 17 or 18, but so far the proposed changes have not been successful.

If you are parent of a soon-to-be driver, and your state allows licensure without a graduated licensing system, consider imposing some restrictions yourself for the safety of your teen and for your peace of mind.

Fiat has launched their brand new Punto Evo in one of the weird ways imaginable. The new Punto Evo launch took place aboard and aircraft carrier called the Cavour. The Cavour is the flagship carrier for the Italian Navy.

The Punto reveal took place at night time, on a 220 meter long run way with lifting decks for the aircraft and helicopters. The cars then showed off their tight turning circle around the massive 34 meter deck before the show went on.

Anyway, on to the car.

Fiat’s new Punto Evo will have a range of Euro 5 engines that include the second generation 1.3-litre MultiJet and 1.4-litre MultiAir units. Alongside these engines fiat will include new hybrid methane and LPG systems in an attempt to create a new eco-friendly engine range.

Fiat Punto Evo will offer Start&Stop systems, and this will come standard on all of the Euro 5 petrol and diesel engines.

Inside features new equipment that inclues Blue&Me-TomTom infotainment, a new practical colour touch-screen that allows phone calls as well as a new satellite navigation system with all of the driving information needed.

Safety includes seven air bags, and one of these will be a knee airbag which comes standard across the entire range. ABS, EBD and ESP systems will allow stability and good braking on the road, while there will be a new Hill Holder system that keeps the car stationary on a hill before it rolls backwards.

The front will see new fog lights that come on automatically and then move around the steering angle.

Expect the Fiat Punto Evo to arrive in 2010 for South African buyers, or late 2009 for European buyers.

As America moves toward rolling more electric cars out onto the road, that’s the problem many automakers, power companies, and electric car advocates are now starting to address. Everyone wants to avoid blackouts.

This week, Ford and Mitsubishi each announced electronic systems that will allow drivers to set conditions on when their cars will charge. Even when they’re left plugged in, they won’t charge unless these conditions are met.

Many electric companies are upgrading their infrastructure to be able to communicate with cars and other devices that pull power from the grid. So for example, a computer on-board the car could start the charging system (or turn on an appliance) only under certain conditions.

The federal Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 allocates funding for these upgrades.

Ford’s system will take advantage of this system to allow the driver to program when to recharge the vehicle, for how long and at what utility rate. For example, an operator could choose to charge only during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper, or when the grid is using renewable energy. It will be available in the upcoming battery-electric Transit Connect commercial van, due out in late 2010, and the Ford Focus electric vehicle due in 2012.

Mitsubishi will also reportedly include a charging timer on its small iMiev electric car when it is released here by 2011. Drivers will be able to plug the car in, then program a preset time when the car will start charging. They can also set a time in advance for the heater or air conditioner to turn on. This will slow the drain on the battery from the climate control system.

Such systems are likely to be widespread in upcoming electric cars. They’ll have to be if we want to avoid blackouts and brownouts–and get maximum range from each battery charge.

The latest news around the Opel-RHJ&Magna story states that the British labour union has opposed a Manga takeover. It has been said that the Magna takeover will cause around 1,000 people to lose their jobs when the Canadian firm takes power.

The British officials said that the Magna deal would cause more people to lose their jobs compared to the RHJ deal. A recent set of leaked documents stated that Magna would cut 1,000 jobs in Ellesmere Port and Luton.

Opel is in favour of a RHJ take over as it would be easier to implement, where it also fits into Opel’s plans. Magna however has the German governments support, which makes this deal a real pain in the …

“RHJI’s proposal is the simpler of the two, there were very few significant issues with this offer, so most of our time has been spent working with the Magna/Sberbank team. As noted in my prior blog post, the Magna proposal is more complex, owing to the inclusion of Russia and a third, Russian-based investor,” John Smith, GM Group Vice President (and GM’s chief negotiator for the sale of a stake in Opel/Vauxhall), said last week.

“We started the week with about 30 issues to resolve, including NewOpel involvement with Chevrolet in Russia, intellectual property transfer rights in Russia, advanced technology access, product development responsibilities, minority shareholder rights and other items.”

We are all so familiar with the recent, or current, economic turn down which has not only destroyed a few automakers but also a few families and other businesses. During this period most automakers have just said that the economic turn down is the reason for the big change, and the reason why things are running so badly now. Most companies did not have the initiative to take the crisis and make the best from it, they simply just accepted it.

Two companies in particular, Toyota and Nissan, have said that they are so very sorry for their poor reports during this period as company executives feel that they should have done better. Katsuaki Watanabe has apologized about this, and he is quoted with, “We are sorry to have worried our shareholders.”

Mr Watanabe also said that “We expect to face continued hardship in our business environment for the near term, despite signs of recovery in some areas,”

So although the crisis is not over, Toyota feel that they could have done more, and they will try a bit harder during the next term.

On the other hand, Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn had said that he is disappointed in the last year and he apologized with the following message, “I feel your disappointment,”

“I never imagined that Nissan would pay no year-end dividend. We really feel very bad about it. But I can say as soon as we see free cash flow significantly positive and the financial crisis behind us … immediately I can tell you we will pay the dividend,” he added.

Ghosn then spoke about the future lineup, where he said that the Japanese automaker will try to boost their green technologies with the addition of new technologies.

“We do not put electric cars and hybrids in the same category,” Ghosn told shareholders. “Hybrids are fuel-efficient technology. EVs are no fuel. Hybrids are an optimisation of combustion engines. EVs have none. Hybrids reduce emissions by 20 to 30%. EVs have none.”

General Motors has created a new five-passenger crossover for the Buick brand. The new Buick will be offered in 2010 where it will have a load of new direct injection engines along with the addition of a hybrid unit for 2011. The new crossover is apparently going be the first mass produced SUV of its kind.

The image on the right here is simply a teaser from Buick, and it reveals a model similar to the Saturn Vue, which will make sense as the Saturn brand is currently being sold to Penske.

“Some customers who have been drawn to the Enclave were looking for something a little smaller, but they didn’t want to give up craftsmanship or a quiet ride to get there,” said Susan Docherty, general manager of Buick-Pontiac-GMC. “We believe this new Buick will excite those customers, and will continue to broaden the appeal of the brand.”

The Buick SUV/Crossover will have a Ecotec 2.4-litre direct-injection engine for the base model, where an optional 3.0-litre V6 will also be available. Expect the hybrid model to feature a 3.6-litre V6 flex-fuel unit with direct injection and two electric motors. This plug-in hybrid will have a 2-Mode Hybrid system that runs on lithium0ion batteries.

The battery kit will be a 8kWh unit that holds half of the energy of the Volt, where it will then be packaged in a rectangular-shaped box under the cargo floor. Expect a battery which can be fully recharged in a about four to five hours.

This 2 Mode Hybrid set up will be able to drive on any petrol or electric combination.

More details are coming soon!
